Three Essential Traits To Look For In A Great Hairdresser

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

1. A Knack for Listening. A good hairdresser listens to his guests in more ways than one. ...I understand how difficult it is to convey to a professional what's on your mind. I'm reminded of a sign I saw once in a print shop wall, it read: " I know you think you understand what you think I said, but, I'm not sure you realize, what I said is not what I meant"

2. Honesty. I will never compromise performance or quality just to have you in my chair, I tell it like it is: when you come to visit me for a consultation I listen carefully, attentively searching beyond the words into the motivations behind your hair wishes, this comes up in the conversation, body language, eye contact, the tone of voice, even the things you don't say, all clue me in on to what you genuinely want and how realistic your expectations are, that is sometimes where I have to do the hardest part of my work, I expect 100 percent transparency from my guests and I have to at times after careful consideration communicate the news of wether what they want is realistic or not. Even then, Impressed by my social reviews and credentials the guest may be so determined to get that elusive look they envisioned coming in and totally disregard my words of caution insisting they "fully trust me" wanting to go ahead with their idea regardless, at that point I have to put on the full brakes and politely decline to take them as a client realizing that no amount of reasoning or common sense will get them on the right track.

3. Performance. This is where the rubber meets the road: "All the five star reviews, titles, and the trappings of social media amount to nothing unless your professional delivers on what he/she promises. I take the time, once the preliminaries are out of the way and of common accord with my guest take on the job to explain, educate, and whenever possible illustrate what I'm about to do and how long it will take to obtain the desired results.
